Your Printer Tracking You

Posted November 22, 2004 – 8:27 pm by Yakov Shafranovich in Politics, Technology

A Yahoo story (via SlashDot) mentions a hidden feature in color laser printers:

According to experts, several printer companies quietly encode the serial number and the manufacturing code of their color laser printers and color copiers on every document those machines produce. Governments, including the United States, already use the hidden markings to track counterfeiters.

I really wonder how exactly that helps since criminals can always buy printers in cash. BUT tracking your political opponents via laser paper - priceless?
