Lynx to the Rescue
Posted November 30, 2004 – 7:49 pm by Yakov Shafranovich in Linux, TechnologyLast night I have been trying to login into the credit card site for a major US banking institution and to my suprise, nothing worked. I tried out FireFox, Mozilla, Konquerer and Opera. All of them failed but to my suprise one browser worked - LYNX. Yes, the text based one. Sometimes, the less advanced software just works better.
I also had the pleasure of a very interesting tech support conversation with the bank:
Bank: “Sir, can you open IE for me.”
Me: “I am running a different browser”
Bank: “What browser are you running, sir?”
Me: “FireFox”
Bank: “Uhm, are you running Windows, sir?”
Me: “Nope”
Bank “Are you using a Mac, sir?”
Me: “No, I am running Linux”
Bank: “I am sorry sir, but I am not trained to support your configuration”

In Opera there is a feature to change the USER AGENT. Press F12 and click on “Identify as <OTHER BROWSER>”.

I don’t think its the user agent. I tried using different user agents in Opera, and it still did not make any difference. I suspect that this bank is using some very strange HTML or JavaScript code that is IE specific.
