Where Does Google Get Weather Forecasts?
Posted March 5, 2005 – 9:54 pm by Yakov Shafranovich in TechnologyGoogle just announced their new Google Weather service. What interests me is the source of their information: while Yahoo uses the Weather Channel that costs money and it would make more sense that Google would parse the data off some other source. So I did a little digging by comparing Google’s weather forecast for NYC with the Weather Channel and AccuWeather. Guess what – they didn’t match! So I went ahead and checked the only public domain source available – the National Weather Service. The numbers did not match up for NYC exactly but for some other locations they did. So my current suspicion is that Google is parsing the NWS information (which is public domain being a U.S. Government product).
