Input Needed for a Story on Mozilla’s RSS Icon and Licensing
Posted June 13, 2006 – 11:42 pm by Yakov Shafranovich in WebsiteI am currently writing an follow-up full length article for OperaWatch on the Mozilla’s RSS icon and its licensing. Unlike the previous OperaWatch story, this story is focused less on the Opera/Mozilla interaction and more on the actual RSS icon, its history, licensing issues and opinions of different communities involved. The deadline for this article was June 16th, it will probably be published after Opera’s Seattle event.
Input is very much needed and is welcome. I am in the process of contacting various communities and their important members to research this subject and glean different insights. However, every is welcome to add more by either commenting on this post or sending an email to yakov /at/ operawatch ]dot[ com. I am looking for input and comments from:
o Open source and free software users and projects
o Legal experts
o RSS and Atom communities
o Browser developers and users
o Bloggers
o Commercial companies that develop RSS tools and use this icon
o End users
o Everyone else!
I am going to have two sections in this blog post below. The first will summarize the story and provide all public links to relevant information. The second will provide running updates on the progress of the story as it is written.
RELEVANT LINKS
o Original OperaWatch story on the Opera/Mozilla argument
o Opera’s weekly build release notes discussing the ssue
o Mozilla’s trademark filing
o Post from Kevin Gerich (one of the two creators of the icon) about the fact that Mozilla MIGHT NOT own the trademark in the first place
o Post by Frank Hecker (executive director of the Mozilla Foundation and the person who signed Mozilla’s trademark application) about the mark
o Chris Pirillo blogging on the subject
o Randy Morin of RSS blog blogging on the subject and a follow up, and another follow up
o Post by Randy Morin to the RSS Public list on the subject
o Post from Mitchell Baker (head of Mozilla Corp) on the subject, also see this and and this earlier posts

Well, BarCamp is a community mark. So is TEH Space.

I think opera should consult a legal expert before using the logo.
