How to Install HP LaserJet 1100A as a Scanner on Windows XP
Posted August 20, 2006 – 10:50 pm by Yakov Shafranovich in TechnologyI TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY OR WARRANTY FOR THESE INSTRUCTIONS WHICH ARE NOT AUTHORIZED BY HP IN ANY SHAPE OR FORM. IF YOU ARE FOLLOWING THESE INSTRUCTIONS, YOU ARE DOING SO ENTIRELY AT YOUR OWN RISK
I recently troubleshooted an HP LaserJet 1100A all-in-one device for someone. The problem is that the product has been discontinued for some time and HP has never made the scanner drivers available for Windows XP. After browsing through many forums online, I found a solution that actually works:
1. Install the original 1100A software for Windows 2000 which includes the scanning feature. If you do not have the original CD, you can order one from HP here. HOWEVER, it is also available for download freely right here (I am making a mirror available here). It is a 25 MB file so be prepared.
2. Download and install the hp LaserJet 1100A communications update from here. It is an 800kb file called “lj1100cuwinnt42kxp-en.exe” (my own mirror here). Install this update.
3. Download and install the HP Scanner Update utility for Windows 2000 for 1100A. This is what actually makes the scanner portion of the printer work with Windows XP.You can download it here (my mirror here). The file is called “lj188en.exe” and it is about 2.2 MB.
4. If you already installed the printer, go to its properties and change the driver to “HP Desktop”. If you did not, install it now.
5. Make sure you have the HP Helper application in your system tray (to start it go to “C:\HPDESK\hpdriv.exe”). Put something in your scanner slot and press the computer button on the printer. Your computer should popup a window asking if you want to copy or scan.

Your solution (and software) for the 1100A and XP is absolutely brilliant. Thank you very much indeed.

A 1000 thanks for Laserjet 1100A scanner utility! Had this neat scanner for ages, but some how lost the original Driver/utility cd.
And yes.. there is no help re. the scanner on HP’s site.
A little note. I get an error when I install the utility, but I think it is in the installer app. and not the utility program it self. After step 3 everything is working fine.
And remember to enable ECP on the parallel port. I use DMA3, 378, IRQ7.
Thanks, Ras

Thanks for the instructions and downloads. Everything works great. I experienced the same install error as RAS, but also don’t appear to have any problems.

I downloaded three files and the first file doesn’t work after unzipping. So I can’t proceed to the next step. Can anyone help me?

Thank you so much! I lost my original CD and have been trying to get the scanner to work for quite some time. With you instructions and downloads, it was very easy to do. I greatly appreciate your help.

i downloaded the CD content (the free 25MB file) but it stops 1/2 way thru and halts installation – wants to send error code to microsoft – have been fussing with this thing all day and have not had any success getting scanner operational – is a new version of the CD content available to use for install?
thank you

You are an angel and a gentleman. It works.

Hello there!
I was reliefed when I found this blog of yours, this hint is great, but I still have one worry.
As I have my HP1100A installed in a very recent laptop, I had to use a Parallel to USB port converter, with which the printer works out fine. I was just wondering if those indicated step of yours will work even with this converter.
Many many thanks in advance.
Yours truly, J.Almeida

No idea, sorry.
By Yakov Shafranovich on Feb 27, 2008
No problem, thanks anyway, but I’ll do this: I’ll try these steps you’ve suggested and then I’ll leave some feedback for others, ok?
As now many laptops don’t have the parallel port, there should be many people in the same situation as me.
Tomorrow I’ll try and say something!
Thanks again!

First another 1000 thanks for enabling us to use the wonderful 1100A on Windows XP.
But now I needed to go wireless and the laptop with Windows Vista is not seeing the 1100A installed in the Desktop with Windows XP.
Could you please guide us for a solution?
Many thanks in advance for your attention and patience.
Best regards,
Felipe

Thanks for the instructions. They mirror some I found a couple of years ago which worked, unfortunately, I cannot get this to work. In my particular instance, I have my original Win2k installation CD, but the autorun won’t function, and when I bypass that directly to setup.exe, I can see it start to run in TaskManager before it promptly quits without any indications or program display. The “Step 1″ driver you recommend exhibits the exact same symptoms…starts in TaskManager, then promptly quits. So, I’m stuck not being able to install the initial drivers. What bites is I had this working previously until something corrupted the installation, and “disabled” the scanner. Any ideas why the setup.exe’s aren’t initiallizing properly?

I am grateful to Yakov for providing the information and files about the 1100A scanner.
I had googled for 18 hours, found no answer, so phoned HP to buy the installation CD but HP had
me bouncing around, (from technical support to HP Shopping, to HP spare parts, to HP Printer
support (who don’t support scanners) back to technical support). So I googled scanner laserjet 1100A and this page was the first item.
re DKeeler Oct 13, 2007
In Windows XP (SP2) the set up program aborts and asks to send a message to Microsoft. Not to worry, the important scanner programs have been expanded and installed. Continue to install the other two programs and everything works out.
re Dave April 23, 2008
In Windows 2000 (SP3) the set up program aborts (_INS0432_MP.exe has generated errors). Not to worry, the important scanner programs have been expanded and installed. Continue to install the other two programs and everything works out.
The remaining issue is the separation pad failure which results in multi-page feeds. Can’t wait for Yakov’s friend to ask him to solve that one.
Yakov has exerted himself to find a suitable solution and took the time to share the fruits of his larbors with others. May he get all the ice cream he wants in life.

I followed the instructions and it worked like charm. I have XP SP3. On my scanner there is a button for copy and a button for scan.
The update Lj188en.exe is only difference from several other tries.
Thank you sir.

I wonder if this trick will work on Windows Vista machines? I think the core system is the same so I would assume that it would work. Has anyone tried it?

I have the same problem as fabian. When I changed the driver to “HP Desktop”, it could not find tmp2prop.dll. I can’t see where to download this dll on the network. I have XP Pro. Thank you for any pointers.

I got my setup fixed. I had to re-run the lj1100cuwinnt42kxp-en.exe file again and things started working. This solution is awesome – I’ve had the 1100A printer/scanner for years and never had it working before now! 1000 thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By tinkergeek on Mar 27, 2009
OMFG.
Yakov, you seriously kick ass for single-handedly providing 1100A owners a way to resurrect their old printers. I can only hope that others have the Google-fu to find this page.
Cheers!

I agree with some of the comments the 1100A is excellent but alas I had to succumb to buying a new computer and have Vista installed.
The printer prints but the scaner fails to be seen. have you had the need to find a solution for vista and the 11ooA
I would donate if you could solve the problem.
Looking for a miracle

I have the same problem as fabian. When I changed the driver to “HP Desktop”, it could not find tmp2prop.dll. I found it in System32 folder but et the end of the HP Desktop installation process I was informed that computer can’t perform the installation. I have XP Home Edition.
I’ve tried all I know – still nothing.
Thanks,
Jakar

I have tried countless time, but it’s always back to the same old problem: When I changed the driver to “HP Desktop”, it could not find tmp2prop.dll. I can’t see where to download this dll on the network, and tried to rerun the lj1100cuwinnt42kxp-en.exe file again, as what tinkergeek did, but still no success.
And what is the HP Helper application? Also, I do not find on my system hpdriv.exe or hpdrv.exe. where can I get it?
