Much Ado about DabbleDB

Posted January 17, 2007 – 6:22 pm by Yakov Shafranovich in Programming

I have been working on putting together a small book database project for TorahTexts.org. Before jumping in and writing something, I decided to take a look at prebuilt alternatives. One such system is DabbleDB – an online, hosted, database/application engine.

Unfortunatly, after 5 minutes of playing around with it, I canceled my trial account for one simply reason – they do not have an option to delete columns. Instead of deleting, they recommend hiding them. While I understand the drive behind such decision, for advanced users such as myself this is unacceptable. After 5 minutes of playing, I ended up with several columns with the same name. Additionally, the interface is very confusing – if you add columns, they don’t show up until you add at least one record. One thing that I will praise them on is that canceling an account is painless and fast. They obviously read this chapter from the “Getting Real” book written by the folks at 37signals.

More info about DabbleDB is available from Wikipedia and Techcrunch.

UPDATE: As a commenter on this post pointed out, they DO have an option to delete fields. I am going back in to try again. However, this option is kind of hard to find – the entire field editing menu does not show up until I actually add an entry, AND edit it. I guess I have to get used to the interface.
