MySpace vs. Google?

A few days ago I got an email asking me to switch to using a Google account for Orkut. Additionally, Orkut now lets you sign up for a new account using a Google account. I wonder if this means that Google is gearing up to compete with Google, especially considering their recent purchase of YouTube.
