How to Make Money in Software (on Any Platform)

Provide an easy to use tool that solves a persistent problem.
That was my experience recently with a backup solution for Linux - while there were many open source and free tools out there, a commercial easy to use tool with a low cost was the one that one the day. Why? Because my time costs money and it is worthwhile to pay a small fee rather than spend several hours figuring out how to do it myself.
